ARTIST'S PROFILE - Graham W Smith
Graham W. Smith began his artistic career illustrating history lessons at school, and soon after took up watercolours, painting old churches, gum trees and water scenes in the Blue Mountains, NSW.
Graham was inspired by meeting Norman Lindsay at his studio (at Faulconbridge, NSW) shortly before he passed away. The constructive criticism and encouragement from Norman Lindsay and his words of "Practice, Practice & Practice" have stayed with the artist ever since.
After moving to Brisbane he continued to paint mainly in oils, but after taking up sailing the urge to paint in watercolours saw a return to his favourite medium, while still continuing to paint in oils, acrylics and pastels. The fascination of seascapes with their ever-changing patterns, shapes and colours constantly challenge the artist, and Graham's paintings are renowned for their strong use of colour and subtle moods.
Graham's dedication to improving his knowledge and skills by participating in workshops with some of Australia's best tutors, to complement his natural abilities to interpret subjects with his own unique and distinctive style, has resulted in over 200 awards for his paintings including many substantial acquisitive awards.
The 'Australian Artist' magazine published a 7-page article on the artist's work in 1999, and his work has appeared in 15 issues since then, including highlighting the artist in the "Master Painters of Australia Showcase".
In December 2000 six watercolours were commissioned by Government House, Paddington in Queensland, depicting the buildings and grounds, as part of the permanent record of the estate to be preserved for future generations.
Becoming a full time artist in 2000 has enabled Graham to pass in his knowledge in classes and workshops he holds in NSW and Queensland, as well as giving him more time to travel and paint.
"If I don't see water daily, something is missing in my life" said the artist who lives at bayside Wynnum, where he can indulge his passion for painting waterscapes, inspired by many years afloat on yachts, ferries and powerboats.
'A painting is simply taking
a rainbow on a guided tour.'
